New Converts To Poker Find Friendship Can Be In The Cards

In a hectic world where some misguided individuals equate a quick e-mail response to emotional intimacy, a new, unlikely way of connecting with pals is emerging: the friendly poker game.
The popularity of televised poker tournaments, computer poker and Internet gambling has turned this once dusky back-room pastime into the new book group. Men and women who thought Texas Hold 'em was a rodeo event now meet for a night of cards where the gabbing is perhaps more important than the gaming.
For Ginny Wilcox, 34, of San Jose, a monthly poker group allows her to bond with old friends and get to know a range of people who in the past might have traveled outside her circle. She says the games are a welcome alternative to hitting a nightspot.
"This is more personal than going out with your friends,'' says the 911 operator. "You can kick back, take your shoes off, have a great girl talk and at the same time play poker.''
