Can ESPN make Scrabble viable as a spectator sport?

The network that has gained a following for televised poker tournaments is betting it can. There are millions of casual Scrabblers who might tune in tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. to see the words conjured by the game's best players.

Two dozen of North America's elite wordsmiths gathered Aug. 15-18 in Providence, R.I., to compete for a $100,000 purse that included a $50,000 first prize. Most owned ratings above 1,900 in the National Scrabble Association's system that generally accords expert status to anyone rated over 1,600.
