The Swedish government has given the green light to Svenska Spel, a state-owned gaming company, to provide Sweden's first online casino poker destination.

Cabinet decided to employ Svenska Spel, as opposed to a private operator, as they feel that Svenska would be less likely to be driven by private profit interests and more susceptible to government pressures and influence. Even so, Svenska Spel estimates that it will be able to corner at least third of the one billion kronor (US$124 million) Swedish market within a year.

The two-year trial comes with several key stipulations: The minimum age for gambling is 18, marketing will only be allowed in newspapers and/or Internet and Swedish players will only be allowed to gamble after having pre-defined a limit on how much they want to stake – current proposals have the maximum limit at 79,400 kronor (approx US$10,000).
