Yevgeniy ‘Jovial Gent’ Timoshenko won the main event of the 2009 World Championships Of Online Poker (WCOOP) on Sunday evening to take home the top prize of $1,715,200 along with a championship bracelet.

This year’s event was sponsored by leading online poker room PokerStars and saw 2,144 players lay down the $5,200 buy-in in hopes of taking home their portion of the $10.72 million prize pool.

Following two days of intense play, the final table saw Timoshenko in second spot in terms of the number of chips behind online competitor Daniel ‘djk123’ Kelly. Other members of the final nine included ‘reddeevil’, ‘Mudvaynes’, ‘Udon Wannit’, ‘Chong94’, ‘Xaston’, ‘PeachyMer’ and ‘Supa4real’.

After being severly hurt in the previous hand, ‘PeachyMer’ was the first to drop out in ninth spot for $96,480 while a short-stacked ‘Supa4real’ was elliminated a few games later for $182,240. Seventh spot and its $268,000 prize was claimed by ‘Mudvaynes’ after he went all in against ‘djk123’ and lost while ‘Chong94’ received $375,200 for sixth place as a consequence of pursuing the same strategy. Following a tussle with the eventual winner, ‘Xaston’ was the next to go for $482,400 while four-handed play began with ‘djk123’ maintaining his chip lead and ‘Jovial Gent’ a close second.

However, the chip leader was soon to be sent packing in fourth spot after getting involved in a raising war with ‘Jovial Gent’, who was holding pocket kings. Kelly took home $643,200 for his finish while also winning the coveted Player Of The Series award, which will see him flown to The Bahamas to take part in the main event of the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

With the field now down to three, ‘Udon Wannit’ took a six million chip pot from ‘reddeevil’. Relegated to the short stack, ‘reddeevil’ was unable to recover and soon crashed out in third to pocket $933,712.

As heads-up action began, ‘Jovial Gent’ held an almost four-to-one chip advantage over ‘Udon Wannit’ and it didn’t take long for a victory to emerge. The final hand saw ‘Udon Wannit’ make the initial raise before ‘Jovial Gent’ called to see the six of spades, King of clubs and eight of hearts. This prompted ‘Udon Wannit’ to bet while ‘Jovial Gent’ check-raised. ‘Udon Wannit’ then reraised all-in with ‘Jovial Gent’ showing a King and six of diamonds and the flopped two pair. The challenger showed only the five and six of clubs while the turn revealed itself as three of spades with the river card a four of clubs.

For his efforts, ‘Udon Wannit’ took away $1,286,400 while Timoshenko also received a trip to The Bahamas for the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

Poker Tips

Never bring your entire bankroll with you to one gambling session. You need to have a daily gambling budget. Start by dividing your bankroll by the number of days you'll be gambling. Then divide your daily bankroll into the number of sessions you will be playing each day. This is now your single-session bankroll. Don't bet tomorrow's money until tomorrow comes.
